Tracking the size of your Gmail inbox with Home Assistant

My Home Assistant setup has a little graph that shows me the size of my Gmail inbox, so that I can refuse to panic when the number is not zero, and so I can briefly celebrate with the dance of Sisyphus when the number is zero.

I find Home Assistant puzzling sometimes, but it turns out this is very simple to accomplish for yourself if you follow something very near to the default instructions.

Install the IMAP integration. There are a bunch of options, and a dance that you have to do with Gmail to allow the data to get captured. Instructions might change over time so I'll just refer you to the official approach.

Configure the IMAP integration to track ALL messages in your inbox, instead of the default UNREAD.
Watch the number creep up slowly and inexorably every day, or drop precipitously when you finally get around to clearing your inbox out.
