Moving right along towards 100% wifi coverage of the downtown and campus area of Ann Arbor, MI.
Cafe Ambrosia on Maynard has wifi now after a long, long time of holding out. On the plus side there are power outlets by every table. It tends to be busy, and it was busy even before the wifi.
I'm at Cosi now on State Street at Liberty. They have free wifi through Surf and Sip, though you have to register and give up a credit card (which they confirm but don't charge). The helpful counter person said you have to register "in case you do anything illegal". So don't do that. The truth is, Surf and Sip also has paid access at other locations, and once you're in this network you're set up to have them ding your card elsewhere when you're roaming.
Bruegger's Bagels on North University has free wifi (unconfirmed) with a big sign in the front window. I liked that space better when it was Drake's. They are not open late.
Talked to someone working wtih Beaners who said they are planning another four stores in Ann Arbor to add to their new store on Liberty at Maynard. Free wifi. It's a chain, and we regularly stop at their Maumee, OH store on our way to the Ohio Turnpike when we go to Pittsburgh.
Even without Wireless Washtenaw, it looks like it will be possible to get as much wireless internet as you would ever need as long as you are willing to pay $1.39 for a cup of coffee and have your own laptop to bring to the table.
On the south side of downtown, Zingerman's and Sweetwaters Kerrytown are two of our favorite hang-outs with free wi-fi - it's a wonderful thing!
